Namaste,

I would like to understand the use of 6th case in the following sentence. I was expecting a caturthi vibhakti instead.

कादम्बरीरसज्ञानामाहारोऽपि न रोचते

Thank you in advance, Amba Kulkarni

Namaste,

A similar instance has been cited in a commentary on Sarasvatīkaṇṭhābharaṇam by Bhojadeva for sūtra: "रुच्यर्थानां प्रीयमाणः॥१।५७॥" (See here) The commentary mentions: कथं "रोचते मम घृतम्" इत्यादौ? कारकाणामविवक्षा। शेषत्वात् षष्ठी। This is a similar instance where ṣaṣṭhī is done in place of caturthī, just like "कादम्बरीरसज्ञानामाहारोऽपि न रोचते।"

P. S. Hemacandrasūri (रुचिकृप्यर्थधारिभिः प्रेयविकारोत्तमर्णेषु॥२।२।५५॥), Śākaṭāyana (रुचिकॢप्त्यर्थधारिभिः प्रेयविकारोत्तमर्ण्णेषु॥१।३।१४२॥) and Candragomin (रुचिमति॥२।१।७४॥), rather than doing sampradānasaṃjñā and then caturthī, directly devise the usage of caturthī. Due to this, in absence of preyatā, there is chance for ṣaṣṭhī.
