Dear list members,

We often use avagraha ऽ to depict deletion of a or ā while in conjugation of two words. But what is standard convention accepted for usage in publication etc.,?

The use case it clear o or e is the reason for deletion like गतोऽर्थः. The question arises here

नाम + अपि = नामाऽपि

नामा + अपि = नामाऽपि

आद्येन + आप्तम् = आद्येनाऽऽप्तम्

Is there a standard convention for usage of avagraha in Saṁskṛta?

Usually, the avagraha sign is used to indicate the presence of अकारः. Sometimes 2 avagrahas ऽऽ are used to indicate आकारः. It is primarily a convention and many old manuscripts seem to skip it. I haven't come across a standard convention as such. However, the commonly accepted convention is shown in the attached pic.

avagraha
